A married couple in their early 60s were out celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.
Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table and said, "For being such an exemplary married couple and for being faithful to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish. "Ooh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband." said the wife.
The fairy moved her magic stick and - abracadabra! - two tickets for the new QM2 luxury liner appeared in her hands.
Now it was the husbands turn. He thought for a moment and said: "Well this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this only occurs once in a lifetime, so, I'm sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me."
The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish... So the fairy made a circle with her magic stick and -abracadabra! - the husband became 92 years old.
The moral of this story: "Fairies are female."

| Oct. 2nd, 2009 05:50 pm The Sinking Boat We're at 10% unemployment - and it's getting worse. http://tinyurl.com/y8a564u
Yet our government is out there, screaming it's head off going "things are getting better!"
Bullpucky. Our favorite gas station went out of business. Two more storefronts are up for "Lease" on our drive - and that's without looking. Seriously, the government could have thrown that $800 billion from the bailout to the PEOPLE and we would have spent our way into hog heaven, paying bills and getting things done.
Nope, they paid the banks... who paid other banks... who closed people's credit accounts, foreclosed on houses, and otherwise just made a mess out of things.
There's a simple fact in economics - the money spent by consumers is at least nine times more helpful than the money spent by government or commerce. Period.
Instead of following basic economics, they throw money at corporations who move it outside the country and help nothing.

| Sep. 28th, 2009 05:06 pm SOB I spend 16 hours doing my labs. Two work, one doesn't. I spend another four hours trying to fix it. Still doesn't work. I spend three and a half hours trying to fix it. STILL doesn't work.
Class, prof comes over, changes one sign, and it works perfectly....
I never have problems of earth shaking proportions. It's always room shaking proportions. Devil is in the details.
So long as we're all writers:
Writers have FOUR patron saints: St Lucy, St Frances de Sales, John the Apostle, and Paul the Apostle (but not Apostles Ringo and George). There are also:
St Isadore of Seville, patron saint of computer users St Eugene de Mazenod, patron saint of dysfunctional families (ZHY!) St Maximillian Kolbe, patron saint of substance abusers (ZHY!) St Jude Thaddeus, patron saint of desperate and impossible situations (all together now!) St Agostina Pietrantoni, patron saint protector against sinking into poverty (ibid) St Catherine of Alexandria, patron saint of libraries St Christina the Astonishing, patron saint protector against insanity (too late) St Ursicinus of Saint-Ursanne, patron saint of stiff necks (ZHY!) St Amalburga, patron saint protector against carpal tunnel syndrome (STITCH!) St Expiditus, patron saint protector against procrastination St Quirinus, patron saint of the obsessed
And I think Arkine was Voltaire in a former life - he drank 70 cups of coffee each day.
Quotes on writers: "Writers aren't exactly people. They're a whole lot of people trying to be one person." (F. Scott Fitzgerald) "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." (Groucho Marx)
I'm feeling white and nerdy today, what can I say.

"Wall Street economists forecast that first-time claims for unemployment insurance rose to a seasonally-adjusted 555,000 last week from 550,000 the previous week, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters. The number of people remaining on the jobless benefit rolls also is expected to increase slightly, to 6.1 million from 6.09 million."
and
"Most economists expect the jobless rate to top 10 percent next year, up from its current 9.7 percent."
(I'll note here - the jobless rate in the Great Depression was 25%, so we're nowhere near that point)

"The Baucus Plan also discriminates against low-income Americans. In one of the most awful provisions of the plan, the "free rider" provision, Baucus taxes business $400 for each hiree who qualifies for subsidies. So this tax incentivizes businesses to not hire poor or disadvantaged workers. By the way, $400 doesn't seem like a lot until you read that it's actually "$400 multiplied by the total number of employees at the firm."

| Sep. 14th, 2009 03:40 pm On Honeybees Alright, we've all heard about how honeybees are dying off (http://www.helpthehoneybees.com/ is kind of a cute site if you want some information, and there's http://www.thebeeproject.org/ if you want something with more bite to it). However, when I watched a special on beekeepers I noticed something -
If the culprit is a virus, they are doing NOTHING to prevent it's spread. Heck, they reuse the same hive for a new flock of bees! If it was a virus, it's still there dumbass!
This guy (http://www.evbooks.net/earth_vision_021.htm) predicted bees would be dying out in eighty years if we kept on domesticating them. Not really shocking until you realize he said it in 1923 - and it's been about 80 years.
Overall, my opinion is - free the bees to their natural habitat, work on gene splicing to make virus-resistant bees, and find the virus and wipe its ass out. Simple.

| Aug. 26th, 2009 09:10 pm From http://skippyslist.com/2009/02/26/the-origins-of-biofuels/#more-1062
Since energy independence is a current in topic, and since I am all about leaping onto the bandwagon, I decided to do some poking around into biofuels. I wanted to see if I could run my car on them, if they were really as environmentally friendly as suggested, and even if they would be available in my area.
So while I was poking around I discovered that biofuels had actually been around a lot longer than I suspected. It turns out that like many innovations, several of which we take for granted nowadays, the modern concept of biofuels originated with the axis powers just before WWII. Which makes sense, I guess, because in America the first time somebody said “I want you to grow gasoline!” he got laughed at. But when a murderous dictator tells you the same thing, you’re probably going to give it the old college try.
Since Italy contained very few strategic resources during the lead-up to the War, Mussolini was worried about being able to maintain sufficient fuel supplies to keep the infrastructure functioning. Especially since his larger and more aggressive allies might not be willing to share their stockpiles if they became scarce.
And so he instructed several of the leading minds in his country to come up with alternative fuel sources, preferably ones that could be maintained indefinitely through domestic production. And so scientists got to work on the problem. In the end, it was determined that the only even remotely practical solution was to try to produce different kinds of vegetable oil, and see if any could be made to work in a modified engine.
These experiments continued once the war broke out, and for the most part, they didn’t turn up much that was useful. The closest they ever got to a functional engine was a stripped down locomotive that went about 100 yards, off of a fake diesel variant, made out of a bunch of locally grown herbs. They could actually burn it hot enough to power a small steam turbine, but not particularly well. The extraction process was prohibitively expensive, and produced a liquid that was inferior in every way to just burning coal or wood. With the added bonus of being extremely volatile.
The “spice engine” though technically a success, was a colossal waste of resources that could be ill-afforded by a country worried about impending invasion and it’s very survival. Some people believe that insane directives like this, might have helped foster the resentment, which led to his being deposed.
And in the end he was left with the epitaph of many dictators. He was a bloodthirsty psychopath. But at least he made the trains run on thyme. Current Mood: dorky
